Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing and its burlier cousin, backcountry skiing (or ski-touring) are the main activities of choice for many long-time Canadian Rockies residents, and for good reason. Not only are they great exercise, they also put some fantastic terrain at your feet – and give you beautiful places to explore without any summer crowds.
If you’ve never tried it, don’t be daunted by cross-country skiing (or Nordic skiing). A half-hour lesson is all it takes to set most people up – and the gear can usually be rented for about $25/day.
Cross Country Ski Destinations
Canadian Rockies’ cross-country skiing hot-spots are Canmore Nordic Centre, Kimberley Nordic Centre and Greywolf Nordic Centre.
In Banff details of the local full network are given in the indispensable Nordic Trails in Banff National Park pamphlet in the Banff Information Centre.
In Jasper National Park there’s an incredible 300km trail-network to explore; the downloadable Jasper National Park Winter Activity Guide is invaluable for planning.
