Coco Hill Forest
Shady forest trails with views
A relatively recent addition to the tourist scene, Coco Hill Forest is principally a forest regeneration programme, which opened some enjoyable hiking trails to the public. It was the first place in Barbados to do so and is popular with young Bajans at weekends.
Although all the trails are short – the longest is no more than 1.7 miles (2.3km), they are strenuous in places, with some steep slopes and steps carved out of the hillside. This is hardly surprising given the reserve’s location on the edge of the Scotland District. However, your exertions will be rewarded by some fabulous views across to the East Coast. The upper section is the more physically demanding of the two, but takes you through the enchanting bamboo grove and leads to the most impressive viewpoint. The lower section has more picnic benches and tables and even a yoga platform.
On arrival, you are offered a walking stick (advisable to take) and a map of the small area, which also gives the names of all the numbered plants in the forest. It’s easy to get lost but all trails are short loops that lead back to reception and the parking area, so you can’t go far wrong. Guided tours can also be booked, on which you can learn about the area’s botanical history.
