Oistins Festival
Easter full of fish & fun (Apr)
The Oistins Festival – what started out as a local fish festival that paid homage to the island’s fisherfolk over Easter, is now a fun-filled week of community entertainment that attracts Bajans from across the island as well as tourists.
The traditional fish filleting and net-throwing (pictured above) competitions still survive, as does the legendary greasy pole, but they’ve been joined by a whole host of other activities: boat-pulling along the beach, egg and spoon races for kids, arts and crafts stalls, parades and live music – from pan to gospel, calypso to soca.
And of course there’s plenty of barbecued fresh fish to sample on the street, washed down with a chilled Banks or some rum.
