Heywoods Beach

Sheltered swimming

Not so much one beach as a series of shallow coves artifically separated by groynes, Heywoods provides perfect safe swimming areas for young kids. It’s no surprise then that it’s popular with local families at weekends.

Thin strips of sand are backed by the occasional shady mature tree, as well as a ghostly abandoned hotel. Park at the south end, and you can stroll across the road to Caboose for a drink and a fish cutter (sandwich in a roll).

Then, meander down the jetty for a view of Speightstown and a peek at the fish clustered around the pilings.

Transport

By car: Head to Speightstown. Parking at the south end is at the north end of Sand St, over the road from Caboose. Or, to access the northern end, turn off the coast road at the Plymouth Bretheren Church.

By bus: Take any West Coast bus to Speightstown, from where it’s 300–400m from the bus terminal
