Arutanga CICC Church, Aitutaki

Highly recommended

Aitutaki was the first of the Cook Islands to be Christianised, when the Rev John Williams and missionary Papeiha of the London Missionary Society (LMS) turned up in 1821 from the Society Islands, in what is now French Polynesia. After converting Aitutaki, the LMS missionaries moved on to Rarotonga. 2021 marked 200 years since the LMS arrival.

A highlight of any visit to Aitutaki is to go to a Sunday church service. Locals wear their Sunday best (think pristine white!) and sing with great fervour. Check service times at your accommodation.

Arutanga CICC Church

The Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC; branched from LMS) in Arutanga is the oldest in the Cooks, and features stained-glass windows, superb wooden panelling and pews, plus lots of electric fans. Lots of locals turn up on scooters.
