Bus
Clockwise or anti-clockwise?
Rarotonga is the only Cook Island with a regular scheduled bus service. The island is only 32km around – around 45 minutes to an hour on the bus, depending on how often it stops.
Which way to go?
You have a great choice - clockwise or anti-clockwise (it’s written on the front of the bus!). Both depart hourly from the Cook’s Corner Main Bus Stop, the Clockwise Bus on the hour every hour, the Anti-clockwise bus at half past the hour every hour. Check the latest schedule online. On Sundays, there is only a Clockwise Bus.
A great introduction to Rarotonga is to go right round the island in the bus to get an overview of the island. While there are bus stops (see image below), friendly drivers will stop for you if you wave them down.
Bus Fares
Basic bus fares are $5 per person per ride; $16 per person per day for a ‘Hop on, hop off’ day pass; or $30 for a 10-ride pass that more than one person can use. Pay the driver with cash when you get on the bus.
Cook’s Corner Main Bus Stop
The main bus stop in Avarua is known as Cook’s Corner, even though it’s not on the corner! It’s 100m down Tutakimoa Rd (the street beside Avis’ Avarua office) - see the top image. This is the starting point for scheduled departures. There’s a WiFi hotspot here, plus a cafe for getting drinks or ice-cream should the bus be late.
