Pelješac
Although connected to the mainland north of Dubrovnik, the slender 90km-long peninsula of Pelješac has the appeal of an island, preserving an identity and rhythm of life that is distinct from the coast to which it is joined.
The spine of the peninsula is formed by a dramatic ridge of mountains; squeezed into coves and bays below are a succession of fine shingle beaches. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Peninsula are covered in vineyards which, exposed to salty sea air and almost constant sunshine, are used to produce some of the most rich and velvety red wines in the country. Ston, at the root of the peninsula, is an old fortress town famed for its walls; while Orebić, on the southern coast, is a popular yet relaxing beach resort. West of Orebić, the village of Viganj attracts wind-surfers with its specific microclimate of strong, persistent breezes.
