National Liberation Monument, Pelješac

Soaring symbol of freedom

Located on a small plateau called Tabor, beside the road from Orebić to Ston, this impressive needle of concrete was completed in 1983 to commemorate the partisans and civilians killed during the German Prinz Eugen Division’s attempt to re-take the Pelješac Peninsula in late 1943.

The work of sculptor Ivan Mitrović and architect Zlatko Jerić, the monument consists of a 15-metre high obelisk and a shrine-like enclosure containing vivid reliefs in bronze, together with the engraved names of 395 local victims. It commands superb views down towards the coast, and is well worth a stop-off if you’re heading this way.
