Castle Drogo
Explore the last castle to be built in England
Castle Drogo is a rarity – a stately home built in the early 1900s, but in a medieval style. The result is an imposing structure looking every inch a 13th century stronghold, but with handy modern comforts. Guests here delighted in central heating, electric candlesticks and carpets.
The National Trust has now finished eight years of renovations. This means you can once again study the bookcases in the library, take a seat in the drawing room and nose about the butler’s pantry.
The castle was designed by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for Julius Drew, the grocery entrepreneur who founded the Home and Colonial Stores.
Gardens
Castle Drogo sits in charming terraced gardens designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1920s style. They’re famous for their rhododendron, magnolias and camellias. The 4-mile Teign Gorge Walk starts from the car park.
