Hartland Abbey
Stately home with gorgeous grounds
Bewitching Hartland Abbey started life as a monastery in the 12th century before Henry VIII seized it and gave it to his Keeper of the Wine Cellar. His descendants still live in it today.
Interiors are fill of rich furnishing, fine paintings and elaborate murals. The grounds include huge rhodedendron, a fernery and an 18th century walled garden. Woodland walks lead down to the sea.
The abbey’s beauty has drawn the filmmakers – credits include the BBC’s 2008 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, John Le Carre’s The Night Manager and the CBBC series Mallory Towers.
