Wheal Coates
Discover a ruined cliff-side mine
If you’ve seen photos of the remains of a Cornish mine clinging to cliffs, there’s a fair chance they’re of Wheal Coates. A short walk takes you to heart of these ruined tin workings.
Wheal Coates was worked for nearly 90 years up until 1889. Life was incredibly harsh for the tens of thousands of men, women and children employed in Cornish mines like these.
You can explore part of this heritage on a signed, 1 mile circular walk from the National Trust car park at Wheal Coates. It loops past mine shafts and beside ruined engine houses as the sea surges far below.
The beach of Chapel Porth, and the Chapel Porth Cafe, are a few miles away to the south east.
