Beer Quarry Caves
Tours of 2000-year old man-made caves
History is carved in stone at Beer Quarry Caves. This vast complex of underground tunnels and caverns were first worked in Roman times – you can still see the marks made by 2000-year old tools on the walls.
Since then the caves have been quarried for their chalk limestone, which has been used in buildings including Exeter Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London.
In the 18th century smuggles loved them, using them as somewhere to store contraband spirits.

Entertaining guided tours last just over an hour. Temperatures in the caves tend to keep to around 7–9º, so even if it’s hot outside bring something warm.
