Souillac
A busy provincial town at the confluence of two rivers
Souillac is located at the confluence of the Corrèze and Dordogne rivers just south of Brive-la-Gaillarde in the same fertile basin. It suffered badly during the Hundred Years’ War and the Wars of Religion but it recovered and now it is an everyday French town with no pretensions yet still attracts its fair share of tourists.
There are two main reasons for this. Firstly its very fine 12th Century Abbey Church which is Byzantine in style with domes, rather like the Cathedrals at Périgueux and Cahors, and an unusual lantern tower.
Secondly, behind the Abbey Church is the unusual Musée National de l’Automate which contains a collection of about 1000 fascinating automats or mechanical dolls. Children especially will love this museum.
