A Plus Beau Village in the Green Périgord

St-Jean-de-Cole is one of the Périgord’s Plus Beaux Villages and lies between Brântome and Thiviers in the Green Périgord on the banks of the river Côle. .
St Jean is a small village with a fine castle on the main square, the Château de la Marthonie, which dates from the 12th Century although the current building is mainly 15th with a 17th Century wing. There is also a large church and many magnificent half-timbered houses with splendid roofs which once won the prize for the ‘finest roofs in France’
Before you leave, head towards the river in order to discover the medieval hump-backed bridge across the Côle and the picture-postcard views of both the river and the village.
