Southend-on-Sea
Southend-on-Sea is a popular coastal resort with lots to do for all the family, thanks in part to having seven miles of sandy beaches; three are Blue Flag beaches.
There’s also the longest pier in the world; a narrow gauge railway takes people from one end of the pier to the other.
Stroll along the promenade, relax onthe beach, try out Adventure Island with its wide range of roller coasters and other rides and see shakrs, turtles and other marine life at the Sealife Adventure Centre on the Esplanade.
Explore the past within the twelfth century Prittlewell Priory and Tudor Southchurch Hall or take in some art at Focal Point and Beecroft Art Gallery.
Beaches, rock pools & swimming
Most visitors head for the beach areas close to the centre of Southend on sea where there are also good facilities, cafes and shops within a few minutes of the beach. Brightly coloured beach huts dot parts of the beach.
Tides can go quite far out, but if you head to the other side of the Southend Pier there is a rockpool lagoon which is accessible for swimming and paddling all day long.
Transport
Direct trains from London via Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street, with journeys taking about 1 hour.
By road, access is via the A127 and A13. A variety of car parks including many close to or adjacent to the beach are available.
