Thorpness
Quiet resort with lots of mock Tudor
Thorpness is definitely a quiet coastal resort. It’s small, and very distinctive, with constant echoes of times gone by. Thorpness is a large pleasant village with a nice beach, and some very unusual buildings.
Thorpness is a place to come if you want a holiday focusing on open air activities, lots of walking and playing on the beach.
Nearby attractions: Snape Maltings, RSPB Minsmere, Aldeburgh
History
Once just a coastal hamlet it was purchased in 1910 by Stuart Ogilvie who turned it into a private fantasy holiday village. He aimed to create a village that matched the ideas of “people who want to experience life as it was when England was Merrie England’.
There are lots of mock Tudor houses, especially surrounding the large Mere on which children sail boats.
House in the Clouds
By far the most unusual building is the House in the Clouds which has become an iconic landmark. Now a holiday home, it rears up high above the surrounding trees, offering stunning views from the upper rooms.
No public transport: Thorpness is signposted from the B1353.
Limited car parking available
