Dunwich
Village & shingle beach
Now just a small village, Dunwich was a thriving medieval town until the sea swept in. Much of the town is now submerged. Although popular, you can easily find quiet areas within a few minutes walk.
A predominantly shingle beach with sand mainly to be seen at low tide. You can reach the beach either by following the road down to Dunwich village, or by heading for the National Trust site at Dunwich Heath (1.2 miles away).
The National Trust own the beach and much of the surrounding countryside.
The heath is very pretty in late summer when the heather is in bloom.
Take care near the cliffs as they are crumbling and erosion is a problem.
Facilities at either site are limited to toilets and a tearoom.
RSPB Minsmere is located between Dunwich Heath and the village of Dunwich, providing opportunities see avocets and other water birds.
