Deadham & Flatford

Constable Country

Flatford Mill

Deadham, Essex is the centre of Constable Country. John Constable was born here in 1776, and its countryside featured strongly in his classic paintings like The Hay Wain depicting a horse & cart crossing the river.

Stroll around the beautiful countryside, follow the river from Willy Lotts Cottage on the edge of Dedham,(now in the care of the National Trust) along the riverside meadows to the nearby village of Flatford (this entry’s map location) which best typifies the riverside meadows, woodland, fields and miles of paths. as painted by Constable.
