The Three Sisters
Historic mansions
Most striking of the Old Town’s gabled merchants’ houses are the Three Sisters (Kolm õde).
Among the city’s best-preserved Hanseatic buildings, these supremely functional buildings, with loading hatches and winch-arms set into their facades, would have been dwelling places, warehouses and offices all rolled into one.
Recently, they have been converted into an upmarket hotel and painted in snazzy citrus colours, giving them the appearance of a monumental trio of ready-to-lick Gothic lollies.
