Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky
Candy-coloured Orthodox church
The southwestern lip of Toompea is dominated by the onion-domed Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky (Aleksander Nevski katedraal).
Built in 1900 to remind the local Estonians of their subservient position in the Tsarist scheme of things, this gaudy concoction has always had the slightly inappropriate appearance of an over-iced cake at a funeral feast.
Inside, however, an aura of spiritual calm reigns supreme, with incense wafting over a lofty, icon-packed interior.
Open: Monday - Friday 08:00 -18:00
