Ilon’s Wonderland
Engaging tribute to children’s illustrator
One of Estonia’s most engaging family attractions, Ilon’s Wonderland (Iloni Imedemaa) celebrates the illustrator Ilon Wikland, who fled to Sweden to escape the Soviet occupation and went on to illustrate the children’s books of Astrid Lindgren.
There’s an English-subtitled film about Ilon’s life - although born in Tartu in 1930 and raised in Tallinn, she spent much of her formative years with grandparents in Haapsalu. Along with her affectingly charming illustrations the place is full of dolls’ houses, games, puppets, and (at weekends) actors dressed as characters based on Wikland’s illustrations.
During the summer months the courtyard contains a toy-making workshop, a chance to learn how to walk on stilts, and plentiful opportunities for play.
