Kõpu Lighthouse
Sixteenth-century stone tower
The windswept heaths that make up the western extremity of Hiumaa island are given added mystique by the presence of Kõpu Lighthouse, a sixteenth-century structure said to be one of the world’s oldest lighthouses in continuous operation.
A stocky stone structure supported by sloping buttresses, it a sculptural quality that have made it an Estonian trademark. Located on high ground set back from the sea, its tower can be climbed in summer for expansive views of the countryside.
There’s a café right beside the lighthouse.
