Angla
Iconic windmills
Twenty kilometres north of Kuressare Angla is a village famed for its five wooden windmills, standing in a much-photographed line by the roadside.
One of Estonia’s most iconic sights, they exude an ageless dignity. Four of the windmills are of the Saaremaa trestle type, with a long wooden handle at the back enable the mill to be turned towards the prevailing wind.
Two of the windmills are open to the public, and there is also a small museum, displaying domestic utensils and traditional textiles.
By car or bike: Angla is on the island’s main north-south road from Kuressaare to Leisi
By bus: Several daily Kuressaare–Leisi buses go past the windmills.
