Tartu Toy Museum
Trains, toy soldiers & animated films
Occupying a beautifully restored one-storey house, the Tartu Toy Museum (Mänguasjamuuseum) offers a compelling jumble of playthings through the ages, including dolls from around the world, board games, train sets, model spaceships and tin soldiers.
A sizeable section is devoted to the Nukufilm animation studio founded in Tallinn by puppet film pioneer Elbert Tuganov in 1957. Many of the stars of Tuganov’s films are on display, together with the puppets and film sets used by contemporary Estonian film-makers.
There’s a play-room for younger children, and and attached theatre offering a thrilling programme of live-action and puppet performances, as well as plays involving children themselves.
