A beautiful place on the Dordogne
Quite literally Beaulieu is a beautiful place on the Dordogne river with fine renaissance houses and the magnificent Romanesque abbey church of St-Pierre. It is unsurprisingly one the local Plus Beaux Villages
In pre-revolutionary times the town was dominated by the ancient Benedictine Abbey of St-Pierre, although these days only the abbey church remains. Nevertheless, the church is a magnificent Romanesque structure which together with the many other fine edifices in the town such, as a 16th century tower and the 12th century Chapelle des Pénitents, also Romanesque, make Beaulieu a fascinating place to visit.
However, be sure not to miss the view of the town from the opposite bank of the river – the peaceful Dordogne River forms a lake here meandering past the old buildings on the far bank and makes for an unforgettable sight.
The Largest Strwaberry Tart in the World
Don’t miss: If you’re visiting the area in early May try to attend the Strawberry Fayre held on the second Sunday of the month in order to receive your piece of the largest strawberry tart in the world.
