Winter: Dec, Jan & Feb

Villard

France can be quite chilly in the Winter even in coastal areas, although the south east corner from Nice to Menton has a mild micro-climate which is what encouraged the first northern European visitors during that late 19th century!

Elsewhere the temperature can drop below freezing point at night although during the day it will be well above especially if the sun is shining. So broadly speaking take what you would wear elsewhere in northern Europe at this time of year except of course if you are heading for the mountains where you can expect frequent falls of snow in normal years.

If driving, try to avoid the high mountain passes unless you are sure of the conditions which can change very quickly. Take the long way round if you can and use the Autoroutes.

If you are intending to go into the National or Regional Nature Parks then do check out the advice about what to take which you can find in: Outdoors & Hiking
