Menton

The Riviera Resort with a Micro-Climate of its Own

Like its near neighbour Nice, Menton is a very Italianate town. In fact, even more so being right on the actual border. This colourful resort with its fine beaches and extremely picturesque old town perched above the harbour is famed for its annual Lemon Festival held here in February.

Originally owned by the Grimaldis, princes of Monaco, Menton is now very firmly French. As part of the County of Nice it became part of France after the plebiscite of 1860.

The Basilique St-Michel-Archange, arguably the finest and unquestionably the largest Baroque church in the region, dominates the old town.

Exotic gardens

Owing to its extremely mild climate, Menton is also well known for its exotic gardens. Two of which feature here, the Serre de la Madone and the Jardin du Val Rahmeh. If you have an interest in gardens, then be sure to visit the Jardin Fontana Rosa, the Jardin de Maria-Serena, the Jardin Biovès and the Oliveraie du Pian also.

Finally, while you are here, treat yourself by seeking out Confitures Herbin on rue Palmero where you can choose from the large selection of delicious preserves made from citrus fruits and honey.
