Bastia
The Old Genoese Capital
For many this colourful, Baroque and vibrant old Port City is the gateway to the Island. It has long been the commercial capital of Haut-Corse but is also a spectacular, thriving cultural centre.
Founded in 1378 by Leonello Lomellini, the Genoese Governor who began to construct ramparts and create the Terra Nova complete with a Citadel which dominated the town and the Old Port, or Porto Cardo, which in turn became known as the the Terra Vecchia.
The ramparts of the Terra Nova weren’t completed till 1480 and the Governor’s Palace by 1530. You can visit the Palace, which is now a museum dedicated to history and heritage and its gardens which have splendid views.
While in the the Citadel make sure you check out the Sainte-Marie Cathedral with its stunning Baroque interior and also the nearby pure Rococo style Holy Cross Brotherhood Oratory with its black Christ found by fishermen in 1428. Don’t miss Dungeon Square where cheating shopkeepers were punished and also the Louis XIV Gate.
