Porto and the Calanques
Calanches di Piana
Lying half way between Ajaccio and Calvi on the coast road is the delightful coastal village of Porto. With its beautiful beach, Genoese Tower and proximity to the highly unusual Calanches di Piana just down the road not to mention the nearby amazing Scandola Nature reserve it’s well worth going to see.
About 6km /4m south of Porto, the Calanques are a series of jagged rocks abot 300m/984ft above sea level which have eroded into fantastical forms, for example le tête du chien, the dog’s head; a heart shaped formation and other intricate shapes.
The road is a little challenging, so take your time and take advantage of one of the small lay-bys along the roadside to soak in the atmosphere and maybe take some pictures.
