The only city in France to be built on a volcano, Clermont-Ferrand has an unusual black appearance due to the use of volcanic material in the buildings. Originally a stronghold of the Arverni Celts who gave their name to the Auvergne region and produced the most famous Gaul of all - the mighty warrior chief Vercingétorix
Vercingétorix defeated the army of Julius Caesar at nearby Gergovie in 52BC. However, the Romans regrouped and returned later the same year and took their revenge by heavily defeating the Gauls and taking Vercingétorix prisoner.
