Lyon
Lyon is the second largest city in France by area and the third largest by population - only Paris and Marseille have more inhabitants. It is the Prefecture or capital of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Région and known as the gastronomic capital of France.
Like many French Cities, Lyon has its origins in the Roman era and it was named Lugdunum by them. They built their settlement on Fourvière Hill, near the then confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. Nowadays Fourvière is opposite the peninsular known as La Presqu’île which was created more recently as the confluence shifted further south.
