Fourvière Hill, Lyon
Colline de Fourvière - Capital of the Gauls
The Hill is named after the old Roman Forum which has long since vanished. At its centre, and visible from afar, is the stunning late 19th Century Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière which was built over the site of the Forum.
Most of the attractions of Lyon can be be found here in Vieux Lyon which has managed to retain some of its Renaissance architecture in addition to the Medieval Cathédrale St-Jean-Baptiste at the foot of the Hill. At the top of Hill, (don’t worry, there is a Funicular Railway for easy access! See Practical Info), you’ll find the Roman Era Amphitheatres close to the Notre-Dame Basilica. Unsurprisingly, the Colline de Fourvière was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
