Fleurie & the Beaujolais
A Charming Wine Village in the Heart of Beaujolais
The picturesque Beaujolais region is situated between Lyon in the south and Macon in the north and occupies much of the right shoulder of the Saone River Valley.
Fleurie, towards the northern end, is a typical Beaujolais wine growing village with a church and wine co-operative, except that unusually it boasts its own Chapelle de la Madone on top of a hill next to the village in the hope of being granted divine help in protecting the local vines from mildew.
Wines from Fleurie using the Gamay grape variety were widely available in France and the UK during the 19th century and by the 1930s the village were given AOC Status and the variety became known as the ‘Queen of the Beaujolais’
