Concarneau
The Blue Town
The first impression you get as you approach the imposing Ville Close of Concarneau is one of rugged, impregnable strength and indeed during the 14th century around these parts was just what you needed! Nowadays, this fortified appearance which has been added to over the centuries, is the main reason that thousands of visitors arrive daily, gaining access over a small bridge and proceeding along the rue Vauban through the only gate.
Maybe some hope to see the ‘Blue Houses’ - the fishermen used to hang their blue nets on their houses to dry - and you can wander round the cobbled streets and enjoy some refreshments here as well as views of the port and fishing boats. Don’t miss the the charming fountain on Place Saint-Guénolé at the far end of the Ville Close and perhaps have a thought for the hard life of the fishing families in days of yore as you continue your leisurely stroll!
Don’t miss the Musée de la Pêche while in the
Ville Close.
