Reims
City of 30 Coronations
Reims lies on the banks of the River Vesle, a tributary of the River Aisne, about 130km/80m northeast of Paris. It took its name from the Remi, a local Gallic tribe, but for most people today its fame arises from the association with Champagne and its production on the nearby Montagne de Reims and surrounding slopes.
Founded in pre-Roman times by the Gauls, Reims was to become the capital of Belgium under the Romans when they established themselves in the area. After the Roman Empire collapsed however, the Franks took over and their King Clovis was baptised here by St Remigius, starting a tradition which would eventually lead to the coronation in Reims Cathedral of Louis I in 816 followed by 29 other French Kings!
