Château de Langeais
The Old and the New
Located above the right bank of the Loire about 31km/19mi west of Tours in the Indre-et-Loire gives you the best of both worlds - an ancient stone keep which is in fact the oldest in France and a 15th Century Flamboyant Gothic Castle.
Foulque Nerra’s Stone Keep
The stone keep was completed by the Count of Anjou Foulques Nerra mainly to protect France from Brittany. It was built on a promontory formed by the valley of the River Roumer, a tributary of the Loire into which it flows just below the town.
In fact it was to change hands between the Counts of Anjou and Blois several times and was destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War after which it was rebuilt by King Louis XI into the Flamboyant, turreted castle we see today.
Look out for: the chimney pots and the fairy tale castle castle turrets!
