Dinan
Home of a Heroic Warrior Knight
Dinan is a charming, walled medieval city 75m230ft above the River Rance in the Côtes d’Armor Département, located several kilometers inland from the mouth of its estuary, which is guarded by the coastal resorts of Dinard and St-Malo on either side.
Local Hero Bernard du Guesclin did much to raise the prospects of France during the latter stages of the Hundred Years War with England during the 14th century. This socially undistinguished knight, promoted to Constable of France in 1370, immediately defeated the English in Poitou and expelled the notorious Black Prince from France.
Check out the Place du Guesclin in Dinan and the equestrian statue of the great man adjacent to the Place du Champs which was the scene of a famous single combat dual between du Guesclin and an English knight called Canterbury. Bertrand won and Canterbury was discharged from the Army in disgrace!
