St-Malo
Brittany’s Corsair Port
Located on the right bank of the the Rance estuary opposite Dinard on the left bank, St-Malo like St-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque country, was originally a Corsair port and privateer ships which had the protection of the French King, sailed from their home port with the intention of boarding and looting ships belonging to the enemies of France.
Nowadays an important port city in the North West of France, its origins lie in the 6th C. when St-Malo came from Wales, converted the locals to Christianity and became the Bishop. The island upon which the town is built was eventually fortified and the ramparts were built in medieval times.
St-Malo’s most famous citizen was Jacques Cartier who discovered the mouth of the St-Lawrence River and took possession of the land in the name of the King of France.
