The Fortress of Eleutherai
4th-century hill fort
A very hidden gem in a little-known area in Central Greece on the old National Road between Thebes and Athens is the Fortress of Eleutherai in Mandra, supposedly the birthplace of Dionysus.
The Fortress, once very well preserved, dates between 370 and 360 B.C.
A short walk up to the ruins for a photo stop, then wind your way over mountains and valleys back to Athens, stopping for lunch at the town of Pachi – about 45 mins from Athens by the sea – for a coffee or a spot of lunch.
