Mount Hymettus

Mountain & nature near Athens' city centre

View of the Saronic Gulf from Mount Hymettus

One great thing about the city of Athens, you don’t have to travel far to experience nature. Along the south coast you have Lake Vouliagmeni - Athens Riviera, but much nearer the centre you can explore the wonders of Mount Hymettus.

The highest peak is 3,366ft and the range runs for just under 10 miles, from the centre down to the south coast.

Kaisariani Monastery

Hidden in the depths of Hymettus are some beautiful remains of ancient monasteries. One of the most in tact and possible to visit is the Monastery of Kaisariani. The church within was built during Byzantine times, dating back to the late 11th century. It’s an incredibly peaceful place to visit, and so near the city centre.
