The centre of the Hellenic Parliament
The famous central square in Athens is also known as Constitution Square and named after the constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was forced to lay down after a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843.
It’s the heart of commercial and political activity in Greece and is located in front of the 19th Century Old Royal Palace that now houses the Greek Parliament.
Bordered by several cafes and shops and some boutique accommodation, immediately outside the Parliament building the Parliament Guards guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s beautiful to visit at Christmas time when many decorations are in place.
It’s within walking distance of many of the popular sites of Athens including Monastiraki, the Acropolis and Parthenon as well as Ermou Street, the tenth most expensive retail street in the world
Immediately next to the Square can be found the National Gardens – a haven of peace and tranquility in the busy metropolis.
Metro Syntagma Square metro station is located on the Red and Blue metro lines. Exit the metro station and you are directly there.
Bus X95 runs directly from Athens International Airport to Syntagma Square.
