Ngong Ping Village
Disneysque approach to Buddha's teachings
The recreated “traditional” Ngong Ping Village on Lantau offers shops selling Chinese souvenirs and crafts and a few eating locales, but its main attractions are its Walking with Buddha multimedia museum chronicling the life of Siddhartha Gautama (who lived 2,500 years ago and became Buddha) and two shows, one a film that engages all the senses and the other a show that reveals how stunts are performed for action movies.
My favorite way to reach and depart Ngong Ping Plateau is by taking a circuitous route, departing Central Ferry Pier no. 6 by ferry to Mui Wo on Lantau and then transferring to bus 2 for Ngong Ping.
After seeing the plateau’s other famous attractions, the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, I then like taking the Ngong Ping Cable Car for the dramatic 25-minute ride to Tung Chung MTR Station, with sweeping views along the way. It costs extra, but you can also pony up for the of the cable car’s so-called Crystal Cabin, which has a transparent glass bottom and makes you feel like you’re traveling in a bubble...
