Star Ferry

Ferry crossing of Victoria Harbour a must for visitors

On Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong.

I can’t imagine going to Hong Kong and not riding the Star Ferry. These green-and-white vessels have been ferrying passengers between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon since 1898, and it remains one of the most dramatic harbor rides in the world.

There are two decks, with the upper-deck first class costing slightly more. The actual crossing itself takes only 5 minutes from pier to pier, but it’s an exhilarating ride as Hong Kong’s skylines on both sides of the harbor glide into view and everything from barges to cruise ships pass you by.

A fleet of 12 ferries–all with “Star” in their names, like Meridien Star–service two routes. The Central–Tsim Sha Tsui route is the most popular for visitors, but also convenient is the route between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai.
