Central
Central is where Hong Kong’s history as a British colony began, for it was here that a small port and a community called Victoria were established in the 1840s.
Historic financial district
Located on the north end of Hong Kong Island and now part of the Central District–or shortened simply to Central–it remains Hong Kong’s banking and business center, with glass and steel high-rises, posh hotels, sophisticated shopping centers like ifc mall, and restaurants and bars catering to Central’s white-collar workers, primarily in the nightlife districts known as Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo.
But there are remnants of a traditional past, as well, like the trams that clang their way straight through Central, the Li Yuen Street market, and historic buildings from Hong Kong’s colonial past, including St. John’s Cathedral and Government House. Popular family destinations are its parks, especially Hong Kong Park with its aviary and Museum of Tea Ware and the Zoological and Botanical Gardens.
