Chater Garden
Chill out in Central
It may be hard to imagine nowadays, but this green enclave surrounded by skyscrapers was owned by the Hong Kong Cricket Club from 1851 to all the way to 1975. The club served not only as a recreational outlet for the expat community but also as a social center. After the club vacated the premises and moved to Wong Nai Chung Gap, the site became Chater Garden, a public park with waterfalls and lush greenery to shield it from nearby traffic.
It’s a great place to watch practitioners of tai chi in the early morning, join office workers during lunch break, or take a breather from sightseeing. The park takes its name, by the way, from Sir Paul Chater, a prominent businessman and philanthropist who was also, unsurprisingly, a keen cricketer.
