Hollywood Road/Cat Street

Shopping for art, antiques & curios

Hunting for Ming dynasty figurines (1368-1644), three-color glazed pottery horses from the Tang dynasty (618-906), antique embroidery, original and reproduction Qing (1644-1911) and Ming dynasty furniture, porcelain, snuff bottles, and even contemporary art along Hollywood Road/Cat Street isn’t just shopping–it’s an adventure.

Hollywood Road, which stretches for a little more than a half mile between Central and Sheung Wan, boasts shop after shop selling high-quality antiques. Upper Lascar Row, popularly known as Cat Street and just down the hill from Man Mo Temple, is the place to go for inexpensive chinoiserie, antiques, souvenirs. kitsch and reproductions, including Mao statues and other memorabilia.

In any case, it’s a buyers-beware market, so if you’re buying an expensive antique, be sure to request a Certificate of Antiquity. Otherwise, anything is fair game on Cat Street, which means you should buy it simply because you like it.
