Yau Ma Tei Theatre
Vintage Theater a Good Bet for Cantonese Opera
Chinese Opera enjoys immense popularity in Hong Kong. It can therefore be difficult to catch a performance, as tickets often sell out fast. You might have a better chance seeing the popular form of entertainment at Yau Ma Tei Theatre, however, which as its name implies is conveniently located in Yau Ma Tei. It occupies an attractive former cinema constructed in 1930, the only surviving prewar cinema building still in existence in urban Hong Kong. The cinema sadly closed in 1998 but reopened in 2012 for the specific purpose of fostering Chinese opera. It’s a very small venue, providing a close and intimate experience.
There are performances most days of the week, with tickets available through URBTIX, either online or at one of more than 40 URBTIX outlets in Hong Kong, including City Hall in Central and the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. Check the website for performance times, and once at the theater be sure to pick up the free synopsis in English. For me, the most enjoyable things about attending a performance here are the atmosphere of the theater itself and the mostly older appreciative audience, making this a great cultural experience.
