Clock Tower
The railway tower that time forgot
Back in the old days, when the only way to travel to Hong Kong was by boat or train, passengers arriving at the Kowloon-Canton Railway terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui were greeted by this brick and granite Renaissance-style clock tower. Standing 44 meters (144 ft) high, the clock was constructed in 1915 together with the station. Unfortunately, and despite local protests, the train station was demolished in Tsim Sha Tsui and the terminus was relocated to Hung Hom in 1975. All that remains of Tsim Sha Tsui’s bygone railway era is this tower, looking out of place amongst the modern buildings around it and a favorite subject for photographers. It sits near the terminus of the Star Ferry, where there’s a waterfront promenade providing great views of the harbor and Hong Kong Island.
