Sheung Yiu Folk Museum

Former Hakka enclave off-the-beaten-track

This little gem doesn’t get many visitors due to its out-of-the-way location, but if you’re in Sai Kung Town having fresh seafood or hiking in the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, you might consider a side trip to the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum, located in what was once the fortified home of a Hakka family.

After hiking along the .6-mile (1km) Pak Tam Chung Nature Trail that takes you past mangroves and a former kiln used in the 1800s to extract lime from coral shells, you’ll come to this former Hakka enclave, which was built in the late 1800s and abandoned just a scant 50-some years ago. It once served as home to an extended family (and their cows, pigs, dogs, and cats) and now contains furniture, farm implements, and housewares of the period. A video shows what life was like back in the day.

Although diminutive compared to the Sam Tung Uk Museum, the experience of the pleasant hike together with the intimate atmosphere of the place is likely to stick with you long after your trip has ended.
