Versailles
Morgan's Last Stop
On the run now, with the Union cavalry just hours behind, John Hunt Morgan made his way to Versailles, where the robbed the county treasury, taking $5000 – a considerable amount of money at that time. A plaque commemorates his passing through.
Though his pursuers were close on his heels (the cavalry was about four hours behind), the raiders headed northeast toward Sunman where they stopped two miles south of the town, camping for the night at the Ferris School. Ironically, 2500 Union soldiers were sleeping in boxcars on the railroad siding in Sunman. But even with so many soldiers on their heels, Morgan and his Raiders still took time to plunder the town before heading further east, crossing the Ohio River where Morgan was captured on the other side.
Slavery & Versailles
On the other side of the Confederacy, several of the homes in Versailles were stopping places for escaping African Americans on the [Underground Rail Road].
